History

Similar birds appear in a 1676 painting by Melchior d'Hondecoeter. Black and cuckoo Brabanters were shown at the first German poultry exhibition, in Görlitz in 1854. The breed nearly died out in the early 1900s and was rebuilt by crossing with other crested and bearded birds. A bantam version was made in about 1934.

Appearance

One of the lightest breeds: cocks weigh 1.9–2.5 kg and hens 1.6–2.0 kg. The narrow crest projects upwards and slightly forwards, like the Appenzeller Spitzhauben's. It has a three-lobed beard and muffs, a V-shaped comb, and small white earlobes; wattles are often absent. The Netherlands recognises seven colours, including black, chamois, cuckoo, gold- and silver-spangled, laced blue and white.
