History

It is also known as the Guelderlander or Gelders Hoen, and has been documented since at least the 1840s. It was common in Gelderland and Brabant but declined in the late 1800s, then recovered in the early 1900s as a show and utility bird. In 1900 its head was chosen as the emblem of the Dutch poultry club (NHC). Bantams were first shown in 1935. As commercial hybrids spread it became rare, and a Dutch club was founded in 1985 to protect it.

Appearance

No comb. Tall and strongly built, with very long vulture hocks. In France the cuckoo form was called the Poule de Gueldre.
