History

It was developed in the 1860s around Houdan and Faverolles in north-central France; dealers named the crossbred market birds after the village. It reached the UK in the 1880s–90s (Wikipedia gives 1886), and a British club formed by 1900. British birds were selected for higher tails and split from the French type around 1905. Bantams followed in 1925.
