History

It was bred in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the late 1800s (poultrykeeper says the early 1890s) by crossing Oriental fowl such as Malay, Cochin, Java and Shanghai with Brown Leghorns; the deep red came from the Malay. Sidney Risdon brought eggs to Somerset in 1903. It entered the American Standard in 1904 and the British in 1909. It is Rhode Island's state bird.
